Yoga Poses You Should and Shouldn't Engage In When Pregnant



It's common for pregnant women to join yoga classes. This is because yoga classes tend to help women to stretch and relax. The classes also help expectant mothers to learn the various techniques that they can use during delivery.
While there are some poses that are beneficial to pregnant women, there are others that are not good. Here are some of the poses that you should and shouldn't engage in when pregnant:
Poses that you should engage in when pregnant
Hip openers: great poses to open your hips are: baddha konasana, pigeon, triangle, ardha chandrasana, worrior II, and knee to ankle poses. These aid in creating the flexibility that is needed in making it easy to give birth.
Side stretches: when your stomach starts to feel overcrowded, you should engage in side stretches. Great poses you can engage in are gate pose and the various variations of the side plank.
All fours: asanas that involve your hands and feet play a vital role in getting the baby into the right position for birth. One great pose that you can engage in is the cat-cow pose.
Standing pose: these asanas are ideal during the late stages of pregnancy when your belly is big. When assuming the asanas, you should ensure that your feet are at least a hip-distance apart in order to make room for your bump. A great standing asana that you should try is the sun salutation pose.
Poses that you shouldn't engage in
Deep twists: you should not engage in any deep twist asanas. This is because they tend to compress the internal organs including the uterus which can be fatal for the growing baby. Instead of engaging in deep twists such as ardha matsyendrasana, you should engage in more gentle twists that twist away from your belly.
Jumps: jump asanas pose the risk of dislodging the fertilized egg from the uterus; therefore, they should be avoided during the early stages of pregnancy.
Fast breathing asanas: fast breathing asanas such as Kapalabhati should be avoided during pregnancy. This is because they can result to reduced air supply to the fetus which can be fatal. Instead of fast breathing asanas, you should engage in birthing breath that has direct application to the birthing process.
Lying on the belly: cobra pose and other asanas that require you to lie on your belly should be avoided especially during the late stages of pregnancy.
