What You Should Know About Total Laser Resurfacing

By Roger Foster

Laser therapy for the management of skin conditions is a practice that continues to gain popularity by the day. Total laser resurfacing is today the preferred method of reducing wrinkles and superficial lines from the skin. Compared to other modalities used for the same, it is less painful, leads to more rapid recovery and is associated with less side effects. We will explore a number of things Cincinnati residents need to consider if they plan to undergo the procedure.

The therapy targets the most superficial part of the skin (also known as the epidermis). A laser beam directed in the affected area of skin causes damage to underlying collagen tissue. In subsequent days and weeks, new collagen tissue is formed as healing takes place. The result is tighter and smoother skin. There is significant reduction in the prominence of scars, perioral lines as well as pigmentation problems.

Anyone who desires smoother skin is a potential candidate for this procedure. There are no major contraindications. Although it is a minimally invasive procedure, there is a need to avoid drugs that are likely to interfere with the process of clotting. These include ibuprofen, vitamin E and aspirin. If you are a smoker, refrain from the habit for at least two weeks before and after the procedure.

There is usually no need for admission to a facility as the treatment can be easily carried out in an office. There is very little preparation that is required. Light topical anesthesia may or may not be required depending on the sensitivity of the affected skin. A session lasts for between 30 minutes to one hour but may be longer or shorter depending on the extent of the problem and expected results.

One session is usually sufficient for most people. Otherwise require up to 6 sessions before any changes are seen. If there is a need for additional sessions, they are usually administered six weeks apart. This give time for the collagen tissues to regenerate. The changes are usually progressive with some being seen immediately and others coming a bit later on.

One of the side effects of this therapy is the appearance pink or red color in the areas that are exposed to the laser beam. Fortunately, the color of these areas normalizes in about three months (or slightly longer in those with lighter skin tones). In persons with darker skin tones, the corresponding effect is the appearance of dark pigments in the areas that have been treated. One way of reducing this is to use a bleach before and after the procedure.

Dressing is not usually necessary as you go home. The treated areas should be cleaned several three to four times a day. After every washing session, apply some petroleum jelly. All these are meant to prevent scab formation. Other important recovery products include a gentle cleanser, an emollient cream, a sun block and antibiotics.

Laser resurfacing can be used in both men and woman and for a wide range of skin conditions. In spite of the high success rates that are associated with this procedure, it should be understood that results vary from one person to another. Some people require more sessions and a longer period of time to show a positive response.
