What Would Happen During Alcohol Rehab Houston

By Annabelle Holman

If one has a drinking problem but would want to stop, he would have to go through a process of detoxification in order to completely stop because doing cold turkey would negatively affect his body. Fortunately for these people, there are a lot of alcohol rehab houston programs that they can join. For those who might have drinking problems, here are some of the things that would take place during this program.

Now probably the hardest part of the program would be the first few weeks because this is the time wherein one would be cleansing his body. During the process, he will probably suffer some withdrawal symptoms because his body is not used to not having alcohol. Now the length of time in which the detoxification would last will depend on how heavy of a drinker the patient is.

Now during the detoxification process, one might experience some mild symptoms that would make him feel very uncomfortable. Now this would happen because the body is trying to tune itself to survive without alcohol in it. Now some of the symptoms that one may feel during this time would be anxiety attacks, shaky hands and of course nausea.

Now if one is a very heavy drinker, then he might experience a lot more worse symptoms. Some of these really bad symptoms may include hallucinations, convulsions, or even high blood pressure. In order to prevent these symptoms, one can actually take some medicines or sedatives to temporarily take away these symptoms.

Once one has already undergone the process of detoxification, then he has probably cleansed the substance from his body. Now even if the substance has been removed from the body, the mind would still want it because it is already used to it. So after the detoxification, the patient will immediately be receiving therapy.

Now one of the things that would give therapists a hard time would be the denial tendencies of the alcoholic patient. More often than not, the patients would still continue denying that they have a problem even at this stage. Now the therapists would constantly be having sessions with the patients so that the therapists may help try to change the mindset of the patients.

Now while one is undergoing rehab, he will sometimes feel negative feelings toward himself like loathing or depression. When this happens, some medicine like antidepressants or others of the like would be prescribed. The reason for their prescription is that having negative thoughts would slow down the mental healing process.

Once the patient is already getting better, then the therapist will get him to join activities that will take his mind off drinking. He may introduce the patient to sports like football or basketball. He will also still continue to counsel the alcoholic and even let him sit in group sessions so that the healing process will be fast. This will go on until the alcoholic has already been cured and has already gotten his life back on track.
