Warning: Fake Food Is Making You Fat

Once upon a time we were not so stressed and overscheduled. Many families have two working parents, or a single working parent with money stress, work stress, household stress and keeping up with kids homework, soccer, piano, dance lessons and on and on. Our modern day list of responsibilities is nothing like it used to be or should be! It may seem even impossible to have any peace and quiet!
Food marketers took advantage of our busy modern lives years ago by "helping" us by creating conveniently addictive, processed food. But this convenience comes at a high chemical cost. Our artificial, manufactured food has been made so it can cook faster and last for weeks, months, and even years on the shelves. Do you want to eat something that won't spoil and go bad until next new years? I didn't think so.
There are more than three thousand additives that the United States pumps into food. These additives fall into 3 categories.
1) Additives To Enhance Nutrition
Vitamin A is added to things like milk and yogurt. But you should be getting vitamin A from real food like carrots, any green leafy vegetable like spinach, sweet potatoes, mangoes and apricots. But because the majority of us don't eat real food anymore, food manufactures add it to make up for our deficiencies.
2) Additives To Increase Shelf Life
Food manufacturers pump food products with additives to keep them from molding, smelling, turning green or growing fur. These additives replace natural fats and proteins that eventually go bad or rancid. When did we become so afraid of our food "expiring"? When food goes bad we know we shouldn't eat it. But shelf life has become more important than nutrition or taste.
3) Additives To Fake Us Into Thinking It Food
Have you ever read the ingredient label on Mac-and-Cheese? I dare to, it's nasty, and it doesn't have any real cheese in it. And soft drinks can still taste sweet without any sugar, and cookies can still be soft and buttery without any real butter. Check out the labels on these "food" items and you'll see words like artificial and natural flavourings, but not words like cheese or butter.
Artificial flavourings are a major concern. They keep fats from falling out of suspension and they form an oily mess on the top of products. They act as thickeners to make things creamy and they manipulate texture to make food feel better in your mouth. Be aware of some of the most common food additives: calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, cellulose gum, dextrin, polydextrine, maltodextrine, dextrose, polydextrose, guar gum, lecithin, modified food starch, modified starch, mono- and diglycerides, xanthan gum.
