Healthy Monday Tip: Make Low Calorie Guacamole

Today is National Guacamole Day!  Are you going to celebrate?  If you do and if you're trying to lose weight, celebrate in moderation. Even though guacamole contains many ingredients that are good for you, the fat and calories in guacamole can add up in a hurry and derail your diet.
Make Lower Calorie Guacamole
The standard guacamole recipe contains a few essential ingredients.  Of course, you need avocados to make the tasty dip and most people also add chopped onion, garlic and tomatoes.  To make guacamole quickly many people mash avocado and add a dollop of salsa instead of chopping fresh veggies.  But some of those ingredients have a lot of fat and added sugar.
The number of calories in avocado for example is fairly high.  To reduce the fat and calorie content, you can substitute mashed peas or mashed broccoli for half of the avocado.  Sounds unappetizing doesn't it?  But it really works.  Both broccoli and peas have a mild taste and a bright green color that when blended with avocado is quite tasty.  It's also a great way to get more vegetables in your diet.
The other downside to the quick and easy recipe is that if you add commercially-produced salsa you may be adding sugar to your guacamole.  Yep, that's right, sugar.  To avoid consuming sugar that you don't need, learn how to find hidden sugars so that you can find a salsa without any added calories or sweetener.
